Character Background

Alex is a sophomore attending Galileo High School and is a member and leader of the gang BoyCo which consisted of Jay Parlen, Issac Moses, and Paul Fischer. As part of a small gang, Alex was inexperienced and believed he could bully and beat up anyone he didn’t like. He and his gang frequently torment Rex Deprovdechuk culminating in a broken arm for Rex.

Early in the novel, Bryan Clauser dreams of attacking Alex and shortly thereafter, the boy is found murdered by a yet to be named perpetrator who tore off his arm and nailed his body to a wall using railroad spike. Subsequently, Medical Examiner Robin Hudson finds what she believes is bite marks on the remaining bones of Alex’s shoulder.

The character’s full name is Alex Panos. No nicknames were used for this character.

Outward Appearance

Alex was described as being 16 yrs old, and 260 pounds (117.9 kg) with thick shoulders and arms that looked like he worked a lifetime at the docks. He is frequently referred to as a “man-boy” because of his large size for his relatively young age. He frequently wears crimson and gold Boston College branded clothing as the initials "BC" are meant to stand for BoyCo. He also sports military boots in a size 14. Furthermore, when Alex speaks his voice cracks in the way a boy going through puberty often sounds.

Alex enjoys being a bully and is mean spirited. His cruelty is reflected in several instances which include breaking Rex’s arm for not bringing money for Alex and attacking what he believed to be a street bum. He is not shy about using his size and strength to his advantage.
