History

“The Shelf,” he said. “It’s complicated. And to be honest with you, it’s something few fully understand. Myself included. Yes, in a way, it’s like purgatory. It is a realm separate from the Patchwork, a realm ruled by dark creatures that were ancient long before the gods of Earth first formed. It is a place where predators feed on fear as well as flesh. Only certain individuals can go there, and fewer still can go there safely. Time is different there, William. One of the worst punishments one can receive is to be transported to The Shelf, for there even one such as me is nothing more than prey to be hunted down and tortured, relentlessly. I’ve heard that death on The Shelf can take years. Decades. Sometimes, centuries.” (SLAY Episode 53: “Goth Kid”)

Accessibility

The Bastion could do nothing. For all the power, knowledge, and skill the organization possessed, The Shelf was on another plane of reality altogether, one that few understood and fewer could access. (SLAY Episode 43: Auntie)
