Major Anne Lafferty is a character in the novel titled The Crypt by author Scott Sigler. The character is initially introduced in Book 1 episode 16 of the serialized podcast.

Character Background

Though Major Anne Lafferty has an impressive military service it is riddled with disciplinary issues. It is implied that the only reason she is still on active duty is due to her father, Lt. General Bart Lafferty, using his position and influence to intervene before the family name is tarnished by his daughters actions.

In an extract from Major Laffety's psych. evaluation she is described as having, "poor impulse control", "a lack of fear that could be detrimental to covert missions". She is also described as being a definite sociopath and possible psychopath. The recommendation from that evaluation was that she be sent to a mental ward for observation.

It seems she avoided the recommendation being implemented by way of breaking the wrist of the evaluating psych. officer. Though she was sent to the brig for that offense her father was able to get her released. Though she talks about a "darker" side that her father isn't aware of it is clear that Lt. General Lafferty has also managed to make previous offenses, ranging from assault to animal mutilation, disappear.

Current Mission

After implying that she could use her father to bring unwanted scrutiny to her superior's service record, Anne is cleared to deploy to Edina Colony on Triton to do reconnaissance and infiltration of an unauthorized religious colony. After completing her recon. she is then cleared to assassinate the leader of the colony Rev. Naomi Corvack.

Though Anne completes the mission by detonating an explosive that kills Naomi Corvack, she is accosted by one of the residents of the colony on the way back to her room and is almost raped. She manages to over power her attacker and incapacitate him but rather than retreat to her room to wait for the assault team to come and get her out she takes her attacker back to her room and proceeds to torture and mutilate him. It is revealed at this point that this is the "darker side" that was hinted at earlier and that she had done the same to another person whom she was keeping in a bag in her room. It is also revealed that she has been doing this for a long time prior to this point and has a number of tools that she carries with her to carry out these acts.

Because of the chaos of the explosion and the impromptu nature of her last mutilation she doesn't have time to hide the evidence of her dark secret before the assault team that had come to back her up find her in the middle of the grisly scene and even takes video footage of the scene and Major Lafferty.

Not being able to brush this incident under the carpet, Lt. General Lafferty is faced with the choice of seeing his daughter convicted and killed for her crimes or appealing to Admiral Vincent Epperson to transfer Major Anne Lafferty to the PUV Keeling. It is revealed that the he suspected his daughters dark secret and had been assigning her to more and more dangerous missions in the hope that she would be killed honorably in service to the Union.
