In 2018, Adi Shankar hosted a screenwriting contest to produce a script that flips the script on Apu Nahasapeemapetalan's character on Fox television show The Simpsons. A documentary called The Problem with Apu had come out to bemoan the terrible Indian stereotyping of Apu on the show. Shankar's solution to Apu's problem was to sponsor a screenwriting challenge to create a more rational and believable presentation of Apu with satire and wit.
Scott Sigler and Maria D'Souza teamed up to produce BrownFace/Off.
