From Adeolu Adebayo: Continuing on my GFL re-read that got triggered after I finished Earthcore, I'm finally starting on The Champion again, and I've gotta say, there are SO many references in this series that I hadn't caught before. NUMEROUS direct Star Wars nods, even more tongue in cheek allusions, using the ways different species speak (Virak's very-literal Quyth version of Han solo's "don't get cocky" during the pirate attack had me in stitches), and the Prawatt playing bloodsport quidditch, this series is a fucking treasure hunt of goodness. The GFL is such a dorky love letter to popular media on ALL levels, and of all things, it's about football. Scott tricked all of us, and used our nerdiness to make us all football fans. You monster. That being said what are other pop culture Easter egg nods that I might have missed that you guys have found in the series?

From my post: Ok, Junkies. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is below. We all know that Scott Sigler is a child of the 80s. I remember reading something once that said Nocturnal (the Crown edition) had something like 150 pop-culture references from the 80s. Or maybe just pop-culture references in general; I don't exactly recall. At any rate, I always wanted to know what they were, and never really found them. But the other Sigler properties also have pop culture references. So...which ones do you know about? I'll start out with the only two that really stand out for me: The All-Pro, after Quentin shoots and destroys a pirate ship: "I got him!" Quentin said. "I got him!" "Great, Quentin," Virak said. "Do not grow overconfident." This is a reference to the scene in Star Wars when Luke shoots a TIE fighter and has pretty much the same conversation with Han. The MVP, after Quentin answers "No, I"m not!" to a Sklorno priestess who asks him if he is their Godling. Don Pine pulls QB aside and says, "when someone asks you if you are a godling, you say YES." This is a reference to a scene in Ghostbusters. So, what other references do you know?

I can't think what that could be. Passenger and Hero are both crypt-era-ish, but I don't know of a lobster creature. You sure you're not thinking of The Tank? From the MVP (I think this is one): Virak walked out to join Choto. Choose File John Vizcarra John Vizcarra This one is fairly obvious, but in the MVP when we first meet the Prawatt, Captain Kate makes a comment about how absurd it would be for a starship captain to board another vessel or go down to a strange planet. She is basically making fun of the Captain-Kirk-as-part-of-away-team from the original Star Trek series. Which is made all the more fun by Sigler effecting a Shatner-esque speaking style for the Prawatt Captain. Good times. From Benajamin Joyn'ts post and comments: Who else caught the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy references in The All-Pro? Awesome!!!

John Vizcarra multiple? I think we caught one in the other thread...

Benjamin Joynt Well, one that's two part. The obvious one, the quote, and the situation leading up to it.

Benjamin Joynt I'm being vague to not spoil anything for anyone else.

Jackie Trinkella There is an Alien one too

Benjamin Joynt In The All-Pro?

John Vizcarra if you search this group for "culture" you will find the thread that talks about all the references. Alien is touched on briefly (no specifics, sadly), and I know that the 2-part Hitchhiker was mentioned in a separate thread.

I guess I'll just start a wiki page as a placeholder, since it's hard to find the threads here.

Jackie Trinkella I don't remember if it was all-pro or not but I remember recognizing a couple lines from Alien in one of the books

Jenny Carr Greenwood I did as the Kiddo and I were reading together. After trying to get him to read HGTTG prior to this, now that Scott Sigler FDO thinks it's cool enough to reference he'll read it.
