==Synopsis==

The announcement included a short synopsis of ''Sparkle Horse'', indicating that the novel would follow the romantic life of a teenage girl and her magical unicorn.

Rex Deprovdechuk the foster son of [[Roberta]] and a resident of San Francisco. He is also a student at Galileo High School. This same school is the home of the members of the [[BoyCo]] gang as well as [[Kyle Souller]] who served as Principal.

Rex is frequently the target of the [[BoyCo]] gang, who has been tormenting Rex for the past two years. After a particularly rough day at school, Rex makes a beeline for home and in his distraught state of mind, forgets that the [[BoyCo]] gang members had demanded money from him. The gang soon corners Rex and he has his arm broken by the gang leader [[Alex Panos]]. Rex walks himself to St. Francis Memorial Hospital where his arm is placed in a cast and his foster mother Roberta angrily picks him up.

The day after breaking his arm, Rex didn’t want to go to school because he would be teased about his broken arm, so instead he headed for his place of refuge – Walton Square Park. On his way to the park, he remembered his dream from that evening that entailed him killing [[Alex Panos]]. He wished it was true and as he did he happened across a newspaper stand that had [[Alex Panos|Alex’s]] murder as the headline. Rex proceeds to beat up a bum for change to purchase a newspaper and then continues his rage on a Good Samaritan that tries to stop Rex from attacking the bum. The emotions Rex feels from the fear he instills in the two men he attacks enthralls him and fills him with a new sense of power.

For the majority of the story ''The King'' is a mysterious entity in the world of ''[[Nocturnal (Rough Draft)|Nocturnal]]''. While there were several allusions and inferences that ''The King'' may be Rex, it remains under speculation until episode 14, when [[Sly]] calls Rex directly by this name. The ''[[Nocturnal (Rough Draft)|Nocturnal]]'' creatures believe that ''The King'' will come forth and lead ''[[Marie's Children]]'' out of bondage. To this end, [[Sly]] and [[Pierre]] transport Rex from his room at [[Roberta Deprovdechuk|Roberta Deprovdechuk’s]] house to his true home, with the ''[[Nocturnal (Rough Draft)|Nocturnal]]'' creatures.

He is embarrassed because he stammers when he speaks and despises his teachers for calling on him. He is described hating himself for being so small and slow, hating himself for crying, hating his foster mother for making him cry, hating [[Alex Panos]] and the [[BoyCo]] gang, and hating his life in general. He also expresses the desire to hurt or kill the BoyCo members.

When he needed an escape he went to his refuge at Walton Square Park where he sometimes read or drew or just let the day pass.

Robin Hudson is the Medical Examiner for the city of San Francisco. She was once romantically linked to SFPD Homicide Detective [[Bryan Clauser]], but had broken up with him six months prior. In episode 3, Police Criminalist [[Sacha "Sammy" Burzon]] and Crime Scene Photographer [[Jimmy Chang]] bring in the body of [[Alex Panos]]. This is the same point at which [[Sacha "Sammy" Burzon|Sammy]] asks Robin out on a date, which she takes a rain check.

In investigating the body of [[Alex Panos]], Robin immediately determines his arm has been torn off not cut off. Noticed 3 matching lines curving and zigzagging on the bones of the remains of the shoulder. Robin speculates that the parallel lines look like bite marks as if someone bitten and shook him like a dog shakes a chew toy.

Robin begins looking for the DNA evidence she needed to id the killer. She runs DNA analysis on the saliva found on the body. She finds signs that the killer was male but also finds evidence of [[Wikipedia:Klinefelter's syndrome| Klinefelter's syndrome]]. She calls her mentor and former professor Dr. Stone Mason to confirm her suspicions but Dr. Mason gives her another possibility – that the killer could have been a brother and a sister. Further testing of the samples reveal a bizarre YZ chromosome pattern instead of the normal XX for female or XY for male. Upon this news, [[Stone Mason|Dr. Stone Mason]] agrees to visit Robin to assist with the investigation.
