Blood is Red is an eBook-only collection of eight horror stories created by New York Times best-selling novelist Scott Sigler.

Summary

On April 22, 2011, Dark Øverlord Media announced the release of its first eBook-only title featuring seven tales from his six years of free audiobook podcasts. The compilation included the brand-new novella "Hunter Hunterson & Sons," and the Parsec Award-winning story "Red Man", among other stories. The initial release date was May 8, 2011, which was also Mother's Day, therefore the day was affectionately renamed "One Bad Mutha's Day" by Dark Øverlord Media.

Strategy

Dark Øverlord Media set the price of this collection at 99 cents USD (69p) for two weeks. After May 22, 2011, the price increased to $2.99 USD (£2.12). The price was made so affordable fo two reasons. First, Dark Øverlord Media respects the devoted Junkies and since some of the stories were previously released in other versions they didn't want to charge too much for familiar tales. The second reason is the biggest -- for the first time since April, 2007, Dark Øverlord Media intended to "rush" the charts at Amazon.com. The "Amazon Rush" was invented by Scott Sigler for the release of his novel Ancestor (Dragon Moon Press version) in 2007. The term refers to having people all go to Amazon.com on the same day and purchase the same book. This causes the sales to spike all at once and pushes the rank of the book up the charts. A better chart ranking gets the book in the view of more customers who wouldn't have otherwise been aware of it and thus leads to increased sales.

The e-book version of Blood is Red was released at 9 am Pacific/noon Eastern, on Sunday, May 8, 2011, and Dark Øverlord Media sent an army of Junkies to purchase it. The book is currently available in e-book versions compatible with Kindle, Nook, iPhone, Android, Blackberry, iPad, PC or Mac courtesy of BackMyBook. The downloadable audiobook is due out in late 2011 and currently there are no plans for a print version of this compilation.

Accomplishments

On Sunday May, 8, 2011, the strategy of "rushing" the Amazon charts worked as Blood is Red reached the rank of #1 in Horror, #1 In Science Fiction, and #1 Short Story Collections. The image at the right reflects a screen capture of the rankings on Amazon.com on the day of release (click the image to enlarge). Weeks later, the collection has maintained a top five ranking in the Horror genre.
