Firstborn is a character in the novel Nocturnal (Rough Draft) by author Scott Sigler. The character is initially introduced in episode one of the audio version of Nocturnal, but isn’t fleshed out until episode eight.

Character Background

Firstborn is a leader in the San Francisco cult known as Marie’s Children. In episode six, Mr. Biz-Nass informs San Francisco Homicide Detectives "Pookie" Chang and Bryan Clauser that Marie’s Children has been in operation in San Francisco for 150 years but hadn’t been seen since 1984. The cult members were believed to be cannibals and the cult itself was said to be started by a witch known as Marie and her son known as Firstborn. They first appeared in the 1800’s and were believed to be responsible for multiple murders in the city. It was also rumored that the cult members ritualized the murder by dressing up in costumes to terrorize the victims before killing them. In the late 1800’s, the members of Marie’s Children were declared witches and in 1873, a group known as The Saviors rounded up 100 cult members and burned then at the stake on the grounds of Mission Delores. There had been murders seen in each decade since but the police files mention nothing about this cult.

Mr. Biz-Nass also reveals that the members of Marie’s Children fear The Hunter and draw a symbol as a ward of protection against him. The symbol implies that The Hunter’s magic is greater than that of Marie’s Children.

In episode eight, Firstborn and his cohort Tricky Dick meet with crime boss Frank Lanza and discuss the murders of Alex Panos, Paul Fischer, and Kyle Souller as well as the abduction of the Yee family, Johnny, Barbara and their son Eric. These murders and abductions were contracted by La Costra Nostra mob boss Frank Lanza and carried out by the members of Marie’s Children. Lanza’s gang is also providing some type of payment for the services of Marie’s Children by leaving a full truck near the docks. It is not clear what type of payment is being made.
